The Short Answer

Most cabinets can be refaced. The requirement is simple: solid, structurally sound boxes. If the boxes are sturdy and the layout works, the visible surfaces can almost always be renewed. But "most" is not "all," and knowing the difference saves you from paying for work that cannot last.

Good Candidates

The ideal refacing candidate: cabinet boxes that are solid and square, with frames in decent shape, in a layout you like. This describes a huge share of Alexandria-area kitchens — the well-built wood cabinets of older homes, the sturdy oak kitchens of the 1980s and 90s, even decent-quality newer cabinets whose style has dated. Age alone does not disqualify a cabinet; condition does.

Poor Candidates: Water Damage

The number-one disqualifier is water damage. Check under the sink — the most common spot — and anywhere plumbing has leaked. Signs: swollen or soft particle board, veneer bubbling off the frame, a musty smell, visible mold, or a cabinet floor that gives under pressure. Surface wear is fine; structural water damage is not. A refaced water-damaged box is still a water-damaged box, and we will not sell you that.

Poor Candidates: Structural Failure

Boxes that are coming apart at the joints, shelves sagging badly under normal loads, frames so warped that doors cannot be aligned — these are structural problems, and surfaces cannot fix structure. Extremely low-quality cabinets (paper-thin backs, stapled joints already failing) also fall here: putting premium doors on failing boxes is bad value, and we will tell you so.

Poor Candidates: Wrong Layout

Sometimes the cabinets are fine but the kitchen is wrong — a layout that does not work, a kitchen you want to reconfigure, walls you want to move. Refacing cannot fix layout. If the layout is the real problem, refacing is the wrong project no matter how good the boxes are. That is a remodel conversation, not a refacing one.

The Gray Areas

Not everything is clear-cut. Minor frame damage can often be repaired before refacing. A single water-damaged sink base can sometimes be replaced while the rest of the kitchen is refaced. Slightly uneven older frames can usually be worked with — we deal with out-of-square openings in old houses routinely. These judgment calls are exactly what the free visit is for: we look, we tell you what we see, and we recommend accordingly.

What We Check During the Visit

Our inspection is straightforward: we open doors and check the boxes, look at the frames and shelves, check under sinks for water history, test how doors hang, and note the overall construction quality. Then we give you a straight answer: good candidate, candidate with repairs, or not a candidate. If it is not refacing, we will tell you what the right project is — even if that project is not ours to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

My cabinets are 40 years old. Are they too old to reface?

Age alone does not matter — condition does. Many 40-year-old cabinets were built better than new ones. If the boxes are solid, they reface beautifully regardless of age.

What about the cabinet under my sink? It looks rough.

The sink base is the most common problem spot because of past leaks. We check it carefully during the visit. If it is just surface wear, fine. If it is structurally damaged, we will discuss replacing that one cabinet while refacing the rest.

Can you reface metal cabinets?

It depends on their condition and construction. Mention them when you call so we know what we are coming to look at.

My kitchen was already refaced once. Can it be refaced again?

Often yes, if the underlying boxes are still solid. We will check the condition of the previous work during the visit.
